The Story Behind the Proton MB-1: A Minimalist Tool Watch Built for Real-World Use

Origin

The Proton MB-1 was born out of a simple realization: most affordable tool watches on the market either try to do too much or don’t do enough. I wanted something tough, clean, and purpose-driven, a watch that looked ready for anything without the clutter of unnecessary features. After searching and never finding the right blend of minimalism and ruggedness, I decided to build it myself.

The design started with a few non-negotiables. The lume needed to be bright enough to rely on through the night. The crystal had to be sapphire for true scratch resistance. The crown and caseback needed to screw down securely, and water resistance had to be solid enough for everyday use, whether that’s rain, washing hands, swimming, or accidental submersion. These functional pillars became the foundation of the MB-1.

A Case Built for Strength

The MB-1 is housed in a stainless-steel case that’s machined from a single block of steel, not including the separate screwdown caseback. This one-piece construction is intentional because it eliminates the common failure point found in watches with external rotating bezels, namely dive watches. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a nice dive watch and I use the bezel very frequently for timing...well...just about anything. A traditional diver’s bezel is useful, but the insert is typically pretty fragile and can show signs of where after just one bump, so I identified it as just another part that can fail. By not including this feature, the MB-1 stays true to its mission with fewer weak points.

On the same topic of toughness, the sapphire crystal adds another layer of durability. Because sapphire ranks so high on the hardness scale, it resists scratches that would easily mark traditional mineral or acrylic crystals. Even after years of wear and countless smacks on countertops, the crystal stays clean and clear

Lumed for Real Visibility

A tool watch is only as good as its night visibility, so lume was a major focus in the MB-1’s development. The dial uses BGW9, a vivid blue glow known for strong brightness and longevity. To maximize contrast, the hands use a bright green lume, a deliberate choice that makes them stand out instantly when checking the time in the dark.

With fully adjusted eyes, the lume remains visible for several hours. In real-world conditions, it stays readable well into the night and often into the early morning hours. Whether you're camping, traveling, or avoiding the glare of a phone screen at three in the morning, the MB-1 keeps time visible when you need it most.

The Future of the Proton

The MB-1 is only the beginning. I envision that every future Proton model will follow the same principles that defined this first watch: rugged construction, mechanical simplicity, and a clean, purposeful aesthetic. I am committed to building watches that prioritize durability and reliability above all else...although I'll make sure it is visually appealing rather than just a boring chunk of steel.

Each design will continue to focus on what matters most in a true tool watch. If the MB-1 represents the foundation, the Proton lineup that follows will build on that vision with the same dedication to strength, minimalism, and long-term dependability.
